    Political & Economic Stability

    Political Stability

Grenada is one of the most politically stable countries in the Caribbean. It is a democratic state with a Westminster Style Parliamentary form of government and constitutionally held elections every five years. It has a governor general (representing Queen Elizabeth II, head of state), a prime minister and a cabinet (executive branch), and a bicameral Parliament with an elected House of Representatives and an appointed Senate (legislative branch). The House of Representatives has 15 members, elected for a five year term in single-seat constituencies. The Senate has 13 appointed members (10 appointed by the government and three by the leader of the opposition).

It is a member of the eastern Caribbean court system. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. Jurisprudence is based on English common law. The Privy Council of the United Kingdom serves as the highest appellate court. There are two significant political parties, the New National Party and the National Democratic Congress.

    Economic Stability

Grenada's economy is expanding in the tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing sectors. In the last twenty years, Grenada’s economy has moved from agriculture towards the provision of services. Its largest exports include nutmeg, of which Grenada is the world’s second-largest producer, cocoa beans, fish, and wheat flours. Core export destinations include the United States, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, along with Canada. Other spices produced for export include cloves, and cinnamon. Exported fruits and vegetables include bananas and citrus fruits.

Grenada’s tourism sector is expanding. Grenada is capturing an increasing share of the market for Caribbean tourism. Much of this expansion is due to direct foreign investment. Stay over visitor arrivals to the Spice Isle are up 5% to 71,679 overall for the first half of 2017 compared to the same period in 2016 per the Grenada Tourism Authority. From January to June 2017, Grenada saw an increase of 10% in arrivals from the United States to 31,564, arrivals from Canada were up 9% to 7,911, Caribbean arrivals were up 7% to 12,640 and there was a 33% increase in German arrivals.

Grenada is part of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank and Currency System. The currency is stable. It is secure and it is tied to the United States dollar. Business may be transacted in either ECD or USD. There are no taxes on the repatriation of profit. Grenada also has relatively low inflation and a stable exchange rate. Since 2000, Grenada recorded one of the lowest rates of price increases in the region averaging 2% per annum. This has lead to more moderate wage increases and has promoted very good industrial relations.

With a population of approximately 107,317 people, Grenada's GDP is approximately $1.016 Billion USD. As previously stated, the tourism sector is expanding very well and it naturally follows that the economic impact of such is tremendously promising for the country.

Labour productivity is relatively high. With a relatively young English speaking workforce and high levels of adult literacy (96%) the workforce is highly trainable.

Approximately half of the workers of Grenada have a high school diploma and another 13 per cent have benefited from tertiary education. While the workforce is highly unionized (80%), labor relations are relatively good.

With regard to prices and cost, generally, Grenada is very competitive. Electricity prices compare favorably to the regional average. Tax rates on labor are low by regional and world standards. Minimum wage is competitive with other countries in the region. The cost of credit is better than the regional average and the cost of a standardized consumer-shopping basket is the second lowest in the currency union.
